Reflections on Sacred Spaces
The Sanctuary of a Church

Sanctuary

The Origin

Sanctuary (Late Latin: Sanctuarium meaning sacred place, shrine). Centrally positioned in a Church; an area containing the altar.

The Emotion

A solemn, sincere and peaceful composition.  I wanted to convey a sense of safety, a musical place of refuge, especially if you are listening to this in the midst of turmoil.

The Connection

One of my most visited pilgrimage destinations is the shrine of Lourdes in France. The enclosed area, reserved for prayer and services, is named the Lourdes Sanctuaire (Sanctuary). It is a place of healing and also one of safety and refuge for many elderly and sick pilgrims who visit and even stay within the hospital on the grounds.

Pray for those in desperate need of safety and refuge and for those who are vulnerable in our society, especially seeking healing. May they find sanctuary in the healing grace and presence of God in their lives.
