Reflections on Sacred Spaces
The Narthex of a Church

Altar

The Origin

The central part of a Church, located within the sanctuary, upon which the Eucharist is celebrated.

The Emotion

This piece of music begins simply and slowly grows throughout to the climax at the end, with brass and strings joining to end the entire collection of reflections on sacred spaces.  I wanted the piece of music to be stately in manner to draw out the significance of the Altar, which is amongst the most important parts and central feature of a Church.

The Connection

The feast day of the Exaltation of the Cross (14 September) is one of great significance for me personally.  I like the way the Catechism of the Catholic Church refers to the Altar as the Lord's Cross, where the sacraments of the Paschal mystery flow (cf. ccc. 1182).  It is the great table of the Lord, to which we are all invited.

This piece concludes my journey with the sacred spaces of Churches.  I hope that these pieces will have brought you peace and the desire to stay and reflect a little longer the next time you happen to be in a Church.

Peace be with you.
