Reflections on Sacred Spaces
The Chancel of a Church

Chancel

The Origin

Chancel (Latin: Cancellus meaning lattice and Cancelli meaning grating, bars). The space around the altar, including the choir and the sanctuary, generally used by the clergy and choir during worship, often enclosed by a lattice or railing.

The Emotion

The piece contains fluttering piano notes, weaving upwards and downwards creating a musical tapestry. The strings provide the feeling of a soft fabric on top of this. A delicate veil or screen, covering something pure and precious.

The Connection

A heart surgeon once remarked to me on how intricate and awesome the design of a heart is.  He felt humbled to have the opportunity to try and work with this complex organ.  I have read that there is an outer lining around a heart that is known as a pericardium. This provides, amongst other things, protection of the heart against infection.

What protections can we put in place to preserve something as pure as a life of constant holiness?  When things don't go to plan we can turn to the Heavenly Physician who can make all things new, especially in the sacrament of confession.

Pray for the gift of purity and holiness.
