The Crossing of a Church

Crossing

The Origin

In a cruciform church (cross-shaped), this is the junction of the four arms of the building.

The Emotion

Composed as a simple piano duet, the first piano continually creates the motion of a cross.  The low notes ascend and the high notes descend to meet in the middle (the crossing) and then travel onwards to the opposite ends. The second piano sits on top of this creating a peaceful melody line.

The Connection

There is something truly resplendent in the architecture of Cathedrals. They shine out in the midst of a city or town, often towering above the structures surrounding them. They are beautiful to behold. My favourite Cathedral structures would be those shaped in the form of a cross (cruciform), with tall interior pillars and a huge dome covering the central part of the cross-shape (the crossing). It would seem to me as if the architect wanted to convey the sense of the Divine, leaving you in awe and wonder at the presence of such a magnificent structure.

The state of awe and wonder may get left behind sometimes. Perhaps when I take things for granted, I may miss that opportunity to marvel in a beautiful moment, like a sunset or the sight of a deep valley cradling a lake. Despite this, I can often be caught off guard, surprised at the reaction of seeing something as magnificent as a Cathedral in the distance, or more strikingly perhaps, when I enter a beautiful Cathedral for the first time.

Pray for the gift to see the world around us in all its glory and goodness.
