Pillars

The Origin

Strong structural columns rising from the base of a Church to the top.

The Emotion

A peal of thunder rings out with the sound of rainfall behind a soft piano. I decided upon the sound of rain because of the way it falls from the Heavens and blesses the earth with goodness (cf. Isaiah 55:10).

There is a sense of yearning and pleading in the piece of music. I wanted to convey the prayer of intercession, especially those of the communion of saints, asking Almighty God for His help like strong pillars reaching up to the highest heaven. The answer to prayer comes half way through with notes playing in the form of arpeggio.

The Connection

I remember once counting 12 pillars in a Church and contemplating upon the biblical significance of that number. We have the 12 tribes of Israel, the 12 apostles, the first recorded words of Jesus in the Bible was when he was 12 years old and the mention of the 12 gates guarded by 12 angels in the book of Revelation (21:12). There are many more instances. For me personally I see a connection with the way God fulfils all His promises. God promised Abraham to make his descendants great and that there would be a Promised Land. This theme runs all the way through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church outlines the story of the revelation of God (ccc 50-67) which contains a beautiful line on how the descendants of Abraham would be called to prepare for that day when God would bring all His children in to the unity of the Church.

God is faithful to His promises. Pray for the gift to see the fulfilment of His promises in your life.
