White Stallions

White Stallions

A hymn to Mercy

The main themes of this piece are purity, innocence, calmness, surety, majesty and strength. The piece speaks especially to me about mercy and purity.

The Origin

I remember a time of watching nature programs focusing on climate change and how our planet earth is rapidly changing because of it. We are all responsible for this land we live in, and the future of it largely depends upon how responsible we are. I sat silently, at the piano, contemplating the beauty of nature and the mystery of God’s creation. An image of white horses came to mind and how they appear so pure and innocent; calm and sure; whilst at the same time being so majestic and strong. I then began to play the piano and this piece of music immediately and spontaneously came.

The Connection

I am often inspired by the use of allegory in literature or film. I recently discovered a poem by G.K. Chesterton named, “The Ballad of the White Horse”. His choice of words from the English language is exceptional in this epic poem. The careful selection of words (and how they sound) really evoke the feelings of the story. I won’t give the story away if you haven’t read it but there is a moment in the poem that describes the image of a white horse which has been carved into a hill (see the Westbury White Horse as an example). The poem describes how it is cleaned by locals (removing all the weeds until it is pure and white). However the weeds can easily return without constant care and attention. This piece of music speaks to me about how we must be attentive to the weeds in our life and maintain the purity, just like the image of the great White Stallions.
