Prelude in D

Prelude in D

In the beginning

Carry peace to those who are suffering.

The Origin

A prelude to the White Rose Album - a collection of 12 pieces with the aim of bringing peace to those who listen to them.

This contemplation came to me during a time of reflective worship in Church. The piece of music is purposefully simple in its structure and is based around the theme of one calling note and five responding notes that gradually ascend to the climax of the piece which culminates in an echo of the melody an octave lower.

The Emotion

Carry peace to those who are suffering.

The Connection

I pondered on which key I should compose this piece in and I decided upon the key of D.  In this case, D stands for the shepherd boy David from the Old Testament of the Bible.  I remember being fascinated by the story of how Saul became distressed and suffered greatly and how a young shepherd boy named David was brought to Saul.  He brought peace to Saul by playing the harp (1 Samuel: 16:14-23). It made me consider the powerful effect that music can bring, especially to those who are suffering.

The Prelude in D is based around the theme of one calling note and five responding notes. I like to think that these represent the sling (calling note) and the five stones (five responding notes) that David collected from the river bed in order to slay Goliath (1 Samuel 17:40-50). The aim of the music is to 'slay' the suffering (the Goliath) in your life by bringing you a moment of peace. At the climax of the piece of music there is a moment of echo and this can be seen in how Christians read the Old Testament in the light of Jesus in the New (ref. Catechism of the Catholic Church. cc 129). Both David and Jesus were born in Bethlehem and I like the connection between the fives stones of David to the five wounds of Jesus Christ at His time of suffering.

If the Goliath character in your life is one of suffering - may this piece of music bring the peace and comfort you need just as David, playing the harp, did for Saul.
