Cyclone Eye

Cyclone Eye

In need of peace amidst turmoil

The aim of this piece of music is to provide a moment of respite during a period of storm.

The Origin

As a child I was always filled with awe and wonder at the epic nature of storms, especially hurricanes and cyclones. Even more intriguing to me was the eye of the storm which seemed to defy the laws of the storm and create a still space of peace and tranquility. I wanted to compose a piece of music that would convey this moment. The beginning of the piece commences immediately at the moment of the storm at full force. Lightening and thunder are represented in the highs and lows of the piano range, whilst the wind is represented in chromatically ascending and descending chord changes. The storm intensifies until a single note announces the beginning of the eye of the storm. What follows is a moment of musical peace and simplicity.

The Emotion

The aim of this piece of music is to provide a moment of respite during a period of storm.

The Connection

When I wrote this piece of music I was intently aware of the Gospel passage of Jesus calming the storm (Matthew 8:25-26). I considered how at least four of the Apostles were fishermen and must have been used to storms. This storm then must have been out of the ordinary for I can sense in the narrative of the Gospel how the Apostles were concluding that this was going to end tragically. Jesus then awakes and questions His disciples about their lack of faith. He then calms the storm and I can only imagine that it must have been the most awesome experience to behold. It is important to trust God in times of turmoil and know that the time of peace comes with that trust.
