Padre

Padre

A prayer of intercession

This piece of music was written in contemplation of the peace, trust and acceptance we need when making a specific request to God and waiting in patience for the reply.

The Origin

I was on pilgrimage to San Giovanni Rotondo. Whilst being driven through the surrounding area of this beautiful town in the Province of Foggia (Southern Italy) this piece of music settled within me. I had come to visit the Shrine of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio). I had two prayer intentions and this piece of music is a symbol of this request to God and His answer. The piece commences with two phrases (the two prayer requests), both exactly the same. They are written with a sense that the piano is talking to God, explaining its request. The next two phrases are a descending set of notes starting from high up in the piano range. This symbolises God’s reply coming down from Heaven; the descending notes are meant to sound like graces falling like rain.  The whole piece is then repeated in order to move to the second part of the conversation with God; this time in thanksgiving of having heard the prayers.

The Emotion

This piece of music was written in contemplation of the peace, trust and acceptance we need when making a specific request to God and waiting in patience for the reply.

The Connection

Saint Pio had a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and it seemed that he would pray the Rosary continuously. I read about how Padre Pio was offered a beautiful bouquet of roses a few days before his death, on the eve of the anniversary of his stigmata. He was deeply touched and lifted a rose from the bouquet and asked one of his spiritual children to place it at the image of the Blessed Mother. The rose did not wilt; it remained beautifully fresh and fragrant until the moment the Padre passed away. The rose then closed back into a bud. This piece of music is my rose to Saint Pio. Perhaps he may place it at the feet of the Blessed Virgin in Heaven, who in turn will pray for me to Almighty God.
